Bingo Game Is Not All About Money
December 2nd, 2008At Martha Miracle the bingo game is not all about money but about people. This was amply made clear by a Marion Resident who said “There are a bunch of characters up here. If you come to win, strictly for the money, you come for the wrong reason. I love coming up here, being with the people and talking to them, meeting new friends.”
More than the fun and fanfare of the usual bingo games, the proceeds from the games are used for financing numerous charity works. Non-profit organizations such as the Moose Lodge aid various charitable causes like Safety City that benefit from the lodge’s bingo proceeds.
As recession hits hard so are the sources of money for charity, which has dried up and to top the misery is the smoking ban.
The hardest hit was Baseball for Youth, a youth recreation league heavily dependent on its bingo games. Janis Hogg, head of Baseball for Youth reminiscences the time when the halls were jam packed that people had to sit on the floor. The numbers swelled to 200’s and even 400,s during the initial phase o0f the games.
